Braking
How sharply your body slows down just after each landing, measured at your lower back.
- Pods needed
- A pelvis pod plus a shin or foot pod
- Usual confidence
- Low what this means
What it is
When your foot lands in front of you, your body slows down for a moment before you push off again. This number is the peak forward slow-down of your lower back after landing, in m/s². It is a relative number, not a force.
How we measure it
A pod at the centre of the lower back records acceleration 100 times a second. Shin or foot pods tell us when each landing happens. We work out the forward direction from your movement, which adds some uncertainty.
Typical range
There is no band. It is a detail number and is not used for advice. Compare it only with your own runs at a similar pace.
How sure we are
Low. Read it as a rough indicator. See how confidence works.
What you can try
Braking goes together with where your foot lands. The cue "land under you" and a slightly quicker step rate usually reduce both.
Good to know
Research links landing further in front of the body with more braking. That is why the app coaches on the landing position rather than on this number.
