How wearable motion sensors read your movement

ReadMyMove uses the same kind of motion sensor that's in your phone, worn exactly where your movement happens. Here is how it works, what it measures today, and what it can't do.

1 · The pod

One universal pod

Every pod is identical: a small 3D-printed case with a motion sensor, a Bluetooth radio and a rechargeable battery inside. Because they are all the same, any pod can go on any strap.

Motion sensor
6-axis IMU: a 3-axis accelerometer plus a 3-axis gyroscope
Sample rate
100 measurements per second
Connection
Bluetooth Low Energy
Power
Rechargeable LiPo battery (target: 3+ hours of recording)

What’s an IMU? An inertial measurement unit: a chip that feels acceleration (speeding up, slowing down, gravity) and rotation. Prototype specs, which may change before launch.

2 · The straps

Stretchy straps, five placements

Black elastic straps, 40 mm wide, with one standard mount. They go over or under whatever you train in, so there is no smart garment to wash or outgrow. Each placement shows a different part of your movement.

  • Chest

Upper-body rotation and lean, torso rhythm (punches, strokes, riding posture).

  • Waist / pelvis

Your centre of mass: cadence, bounce, hip sway and overall rhythm.

  • Thigh · left & right

Upper-leg swing. Paired with a shank pod it is the basis for knee-angle estimates (roadmap).

  • Calf / ankle · left & right

Each step, left and right: step timing today; ground contact and asymmetry on the roadmap.

  • Upper arm / wrist · left & right

Arm swing, strikes, strokes and styling, for boxing, tennis, dance and running form.

3 · The app

From raw motion to something you can read

The web app at app.readmymove.com connects to your pods, records the session and charts it. Today your recordings are stored locally in your browser. iOS and Android apps are planned.

  1. 01

    Sense

Each pod measures acceleration and rotation on 3 axes, 100 times per second.

  2. 02

    Stream

Pods send their data over Bluetooth Low Energy to the app on your phone or laptop.

  3. 03

    Align

Pods have separate clocks, so the app lines their signals up on one timeline.

  4. 04

    Analyse

Algorithms find steps and rhythm, and later more, in the combined signals.

  5. 05

    Show

You get charts per session. Each metric is labelled with how far along it is.

4 · What we measure

Today vs roadmap

A clear label on every metric. Roadmap items are goals, not promises of a date or an accuracy.

  • Live motion recording

Raw acceleration and rotation from every pod, live.

    Available now
  • Per-session charts

    Scroll through each recording afterwards.

    Available now
  • Cadence & step analysis

Steps per minute and step timing (an estimate, being validated).

    Available now
  • Ground contact time

How long each foot stays on the ground.

    On the roadmap
  • Left / right asymmetry

    Differences between your two sides.

    On the roadmap
  • Joint-angle estimates

For example knee bend, from thigh and shank pods.

    On the roadmap
  • Activity & style recognition

For example telling bachata from salsa.

    On the roadmap
  • Beat & timing feedback

How your steps line up with the music.

    On the roadmap
  • Heart rate & HRV

With the V2 chest strap, or a Bluetooth strap you already own (planned).

    Coming soon

Coming soon

Adding heart rate

Movement shows how you move, and heart rate shows what it costs you. We are working on both, on one timeline.

Coming soon

Heart-rate chest strap (V2)

A chest strap with built-in electrodes that holds a standard pod. It will record heart rate and heart-rate variability (HRV) together with torso motion, so you can see effort and movement on one timeline.

Specs and price will be announced later. It is not a medical device.

On the roadmap

Bring your own heart-rate strap

Already own a chest strap? Many straps, for example from Garmin, Polar or Wahoo, broadcast heart rate over standard Bluetooth. We plan to let the app pair them alongside your pods.

This is planned and not available yet. Compatibility with specific models will be confirmed before launch. Brand names belong to their owners.

5 · Honest limits

What ReadMyMove can’t do (yet, or ever)

Motion sensors are powerful but not magic. We would rather tell you the limits than oversell them.

  • ReadMyMove is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat or predict injuries.
  • It does not measure ground reaction forces or muscle activity.
  • It cannot rebuild an exact 3D model of your foot and ankle.
  • The pods have no compass, so the absolute direction you face drifts over time. We work around this with movement-based methods.
  • Straps can shift slightly on skin, which adds noise. We are researching ways to detect this and flag it.
  • Every metric is an estimate until we have checked it against reference measurements, and we will publish those results.

6 · Validation

How we'll earn your trust

Before a metric leaves the roadmap, we compare it with reference measurements and publish what we find, including where it falls short.

  • Compare against video and lab reference systems · planned
  • Repeat tests: strap off and on, different speeds, different people · planned
  • Show a quality flag when a recording looks unreliable · planned
  • Publish methods and results on this site · planned
